Job Introduction
The radio newsroom broadcasts the news to tens of millions of listeners in the UK and around the world. It provides the news for Radio 2, R3, R4, 5 live, 6Music, local radio and the World Service. It is also responsible for the BBC’s news service on voice-activated devices. When it comes to journalism of record, the radio newsroom sets the standard.
We are looking to appoint a senior journalist who can edit the output and produce news to the highest standard. You will know how bring the best out of the BBC's correspondents and reporters, and be able to plan future coverage.
Senior Journalists play a vital role in the newsroom. As well as producing news bulletins for the output we serve, they occasionally report, develop specialist knowledge and edit the output. They should be able to broadcast and manage small production teams.
Main Responsibilities
- Shaping the news agenda for the networks we serve
- Writing news bulletins, summaries and newspaper reviews with wit and flair, often under pressure - with the networks and audiences in mind.
- Compiling news and programme running orders.
- Working with the entire range of on-air talent, from editors to reporters.
- Supervising the work of junior colleagues.
- Acting up to more senior roles.
- Liaising with colleagues throughout the BBC.
- Standing in as field producers and reporters if required.
- Planning and delivering one-off projects, editorial or organisational.
- Editorial Judgement: making the right editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC's distinctive news agendas; generating original ideas for broadcast.
- Detailed knowledge of BBC News services and output.
- First class writing and production skills.
- Experience in producing news summaries and bulletins.
- Extensive experience of radio production and relevant systems.
- Experience in producing news summaries, bulletins and programmes.
- Experience in producing podcasts - or a willingness to master the skills to do so.
- Proven experience in leading teams - or demonstrating the potential to do so.
