Job summary

The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. This role is for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the Transport Support Unit (TSU) in York Garrison as a Leading Hand Driver in the self-drive Office. You will be working in a team of three personnel in a very busy office, the job will involve day to day interaction with military customers, local garages, and other civilian stakeholders, issuing the self-drive vehicle fleet to the customer and working on the MOD transport IT system, also the occasional driving job, this job is very similar to working in a hire car company.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

This role is in the logistics business area and it is similar to working in the hire car environment. Occasional driving is required but the focus of this job is handing out (issuing) vehicles to customers.

Key responsibilities:

  • To complete Hand-Over /Take-Over documentation of our fleet of 70 vehicles and issue these vehicles to the customer.
  • To work on the MODs transport I.T System assisting the Manager in the allocation and scheduling of our Fleet Vehicles and closing jobs down.
  • Act as the front of desk and transport focal point with reference to Self-Drive booking anomalies.
  • Communicate with the customer to ensure that they understand and adhere to the regulations that are employed by the MOD.
  • Complete some local driving jobs within the scope of the driving licences required for this advertised job.
  • On occasions you will complete other tasks associated with the Self-Drive within your skill zone capability and job criteria.
  • Assist the Self-Drive Manager in all aspects of the department outputs regarding Health & Safety and Fire Safety, adhering to local and MOD policies.
  • Full training on all aspects of the advertised job will be given to the successful candidate.

Person specification

Essential skills required:

  • CAT D1 and CAT C1 driving licence is required
  • MS Office (Word & Excel)
  • Must be a strong communicator and customer-focused

Desirable skills:

  • Any IT qualifications would be beneficial
